Weekend Getaway

As wonderful as it is to live in NYC, it is essential to escape it once in a while. We are lucky enough to have an amazing place to get away to at my parents house in the country in Connecticut. Apparently it is actually fall outside of the city (it was in the 70's and 80's here all week), and we lucked out with the most spectacular autumn day.. you know the kind.. blue skies, crisp cool air and lot's of sunshine.

My mom's garden still has a little life left in it yet before the first frost

We started the day off with a cup of coffee down by the pond. For people who live in an apartment with no outdoor space, this is special. The air was so clean and crisp and the sunlight was dancing on the water. It was one of those little moments..

Later on, we took the opportunity to go apple picking at a nearby orchard. In addition to apples, we got peaches, pears, corn on the cob and pickled eggs (a favorite of Andrew's). Once home, we made two pies - a peach and an apple... I have to say, I don't know if was because we took the time to pick the fruit fresh or the act of baking them ourselves, but I think these were the best pies I've ever tasted..

It really was such a nice change of pace from the hustle of the city. The only problem is that every time we go to the country and experience the joys of shucking corn on the cob out on the porch (where it is supposed to be done as opposed to over your trash container and then you're stepping on those little hairs for days), we start to wonder.. why are we living where we are living? should we reconsider? where? how? what? ... big questions that we don't have the answers to yet. For now, we'll just relish our weekend escapes and try and bring our new found pie making skills back the city.

swedish hasbeens

I spent all summer in a sandal version of these.. and they were the best! Not sure what kind of winter to expect, but I wonder if these could pass as my boots for the season. Hmmmm....

Lizzie Fortunato

I am loving the new Fall '09 jewelry collection from Lizzie Fortunato. The mixture of texture and patterns with a bit o' bling really reflects the handmade feel of each piece. Oh, and I know summer is over, but those photos make me yearn for just one more road trip. sigh..

Get your craft on

The weather has started to turn a bit this week. There is a slight chill in the air reminding us that summer is sighing her goodbyes and that autumn is around the corner. Like a lot of people who live in the NE, autumn is my favorite season (it used to be spring, but we don't seem to get spring anymore.. it just goes from freezing to humid). One of the things I love about fall is the excuse to stay indoors and get my craft on. These are a few of the projects I hope to complete this fall/winter. I'll keep you posted..

These soap dispensers from Design Sponge are so pretty. perhaps I would actually keep the soap on the counter instead of under the sink where it currently lives..

Charlie Harper needlepoint canvases from Purl. I hope they get more in.. the ones I wanted went like hot cakes!

These embroidered sampler pillows from Purl are so sweet. I really want to redo our bedroom this year and I love the tiny sweet line work of these pillows. I think they would be especially great in fun bright colors..

yoyo! I've always wanted to learn how to make these.. not sure I need anymore pillows, but perhaps I'll think of a different canvas for them...

I would love to add a few pieces from their Fall/Winter 2009 to my closet. Those colors would cheer me up on the coldest of winter days..

Labor Day

Happy Labor Day! Since we we're traveling yesterday, we celebrated our anniversary with a leisurely day in the city. Our first stop was the recently opened High Line, the elevated park on the west side. It was a bit crowded, as to be expected on a holiday.. but the overall design and landscaping were so impressive and super beautiful. I would love to go back on a Wednesday afternoon with a good book and a few treats and daydream the day away..

Afterwards, we had a yummy lunch at Cookshop
Then we strolled around the city.. all in all, a perfect day!

1 year

Yesterday marked our first year anniversary. I feel so blessed to be able to wake up each morning knowing that you are by my side. Thank you and I look forward to all the years that lie ahead.. xo
